PROJECT BACKGROUND

Spider-Man is Marvel’s most popular hero, having spawned countless comics, TV series, video games, and movies. He’s the world’s most profitable superhero, and often acts as Marvel’s mascot.

Interestingly enough, however, Marvel does not own the rights to produce Spider-Man films. It’s a long and convoluted story, but at its simplest, Marvel sold off the film rights to many of their characters before their film studio became as large as it is today. As a result, the legal right to create Spider-Man films belongs to Sony Pictures.

Sony and Marvel were able to work out a deal, however, allowing Marvel Studios to produce Spider-Man movies (Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home) and include him in their cinematic universe (Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame). Fans were happy, Marvel and Sony shared profits, and all was well.

Until it wasn’t.

In August 2019, the deal between Marvel and Sony broke down, breaking the hearts of fans everywhere. Hot off the heels of the very successful Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker was taken back, seemingly ending his career in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony would take over production, and any future movies would need to be standalone films not related to any of Marvel’s films or characters. It was a nightmare.

Until it wasn’t.

A new deal was made just a few weeks later, bringing Spider-Man back home to the MCU. It was huge news for any Spider-Man or Marvel fan, and I just had to create a piece of art to honor that! I referenced one of his iconic web-swing poses, attaching his web to a 3D Marvel Studios logo as he’s now sticking around. Playing off the “home” theme in the movie titles, the piece is aptly titled: Staying Home.
